The Sinners Prayer
Say the following prayer out loud, believe it from your heart, and you will become saved and born again.
I now believe that Jesus Christ is Your only begotten Son, that He came to our earth in the flesh and died on the cross to take away all of my sins and the sins of this world. I believe that Jesus Christ then rose from the dead on the third day to give all of us eternal life.
I now confess to You all of the wrong and sinful things that I have ever done in my life. I ask that You please forgive me and wash away all of my sins by the blood that You have personally shed for me on the cross. I am now ready to accept You as my personal Lord and Savior. I now ask that You come into my life and live with me for all of eternity.
Father, Jesus - I now believe that I am truly saved and born again.
Thank You Father.
Thank You Jesus.
The prayer above is a guideline, you do not have to word it exactly like that, but that is the basics of what you should include, just does not have to be word for word. Praying to God is like talking, you can pray out loud or you can pray in your mind, whatever you feel most comfortable doing. Talk to Him with respect as you would your Father, because after all, He IS your Father, your Heavenly Father.
After you have asked the Lord to forgive you and truly meant it, you must repent of your sins. What does it mean to repent? It simply means that you stop doing what you know is a sin. If you are cheating on your spouse, or you are a shoplifter, or you hang out in bars getting drunk and wasting money, or you are abusive to your family or others, you know what it is you need to stop doing, so it is now time to repent and do your very best to stop.
Will you suddenly become perfect once you have been saved? Of course not, none of us can or will ever be perfect until we are in Heaven. Here on earth we have what is called an Adamic Nature. Meaning that no matter how hard we try, we will fail, we will sin, but the difference is that we now are trying NOT to sin, we feel bad when we sin, where before we were saved, we probably really did not care.
Let me tell you a little about myself. I broke every commandment there was before I was saved. I was a thief, an aldulterer, I had two abortions, I gambled, I did a LOT of really terrible things, even though I knew they were wrong, but I was selfish and really did not care that these things were wrong, I only cared about what I wanted. Sound familiar? Are you in this same boat?
Well guess what? Jesus Christ came to this earth and suffered extreme torment by being beaten to a pulp and then crucified with the weight of all the sins and evil on his shoulders, He who was perfect and had not ever sinned, not once, but He loves us so much, He died for us. Has anyone else you know ever died for you? For most of us the answer is no.
Next step is to find a good church. I go to an Assembly of God church and it's an awesome place to be. You need to find a church that preaches what the Bible says, and ALL of what the Bible says. There are "feel good" churches out there that only talk about Heaven, and never mention Hell. Well, Hell is REAL and it is somewhere you do not want to spend an eternity in. So, find a good evangelical Christian church. Give yourself a few weeks to get comfortable. I was uncomfortable the first couple of weeks even though I knew quite a few people in this church, it just felt strange to me. I also thought I'd never come to like the worship music, that took about 3 weeks, and now I absolutely LOVE it! See, I was one who always listened to heavy metal music and was never one to listen to slow or romantic type songs, so at first I thought, man, I'm never going to get used to this, but I prayed for God to give me a love of this music and He did!
If you do not already own a Bible, go buy one that has the New Testament AND the Old Testament. I personally find it easier to understand the New Living Translation, especially for newbies. The Holy Bible is God's Word and his Love Letter to YOU, to ME, to all of us. Read it daily, perhaps a chapter or two per day, whatever you can do. It will bring you closer to God, this is the LIVING Word of God.
You will find that once you are saved, that many of the things you used to want to do that were sinful, you will find it easier to give them up. Now, does this mean that Christians don't have fun? Of course not! That was one of the things I was worried about, I thought that becoming a Christian was going to be an awfully boring thing, but it's been awesome. I look forward to going to church every Sunday and every Wednesday and any time there are fellowship gatherings I'm in on it!
I'm also not worried about dying any more. Before I was saved, it was always in the back of my mind that I knew I would go to hell if I died and I did have a couple of bad car wrecks and could have died, but the Lord waited on me. Why? I don't know, but I'm so glad He did. I have a peace and serenity that I never had before. But do I still make mistakes? Every day! One of my bad habits was a filthy mouth. It was REALLY bad, I cursed a LOT. Now, since I've been saved, I hear other people using the same filthy language that I used to use and I think, man, that used to be ME, I used to sound some trashy and so common. Do I still cuss? Yes, once in awhile, though always by accident. This swearing was a life long habit. I did not become saved until I was 50 years old and old habits are hard to break. So, once in awhile one does slip out, but I feel bad and I ask the Lord to forgive me and He does! But of course, you have to try to stop, but when you slip up, ask the Lord for forgiveness.
8 Powerful Verses
All showing us that we have all been born into this world as corrupt sinners - and that having a true repentant heart will be the key to being able to receive God's gift of eternal salvation through His Son Jesus Christ.
"For godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation ..." (2 Corinthians 7:10)
"Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord." (Acts 3:19)
"I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish." (Luke 13:5)
"Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me." (Psalms 51:5)
"... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God ..." (Romans 3:23)
As it is written: "There is none righteous, no not one ..." (Romans 3:10)
"But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind ..." (Isaiah 64:6)
"But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us ..." (Titus 3:4)
All 8 of these verses are major power verses on being able to understand exactly what needs to be understood before we can really have a true conversion experience with the Lord.
This is why the first three verses are really emphasizing the fact that you must first be willing to repent before God before you can really accept Jesus as your personal Savior.
